Tip Reasoning

  • Only five of Atletico’s 12 home league games this season have featured three or more goals
  • Under 2.5 goals has landed in seven of the last eight league meetings between this pair
  • Five of the last eight league meetings between these Madrid rivals have ended as draws

Madrid derby may not meet expectations

Sunday’s Madrid derby at the Wanda Metropolitano carries even greater significance than usual with Atletico and Real both in the thick of the La Liga title race, but the heavyweight clash may struggle to live up to its billing.

La Liga leaders Atletico are five points clear of fierce rivals Real – Barcelona are sandwiched in between – and have a game in hand, so Zinedine Zidane will be well aware of the importance of securing victory for his visitors.

But injuries to some of their most influential assets make the task lying in wait a daunting one.

Captain Sergio Ramos and fellow defender Dani Carvajal remain sidelined, Eden Hazard is a doubt and 16-goal top scorer Karim Benzema may be lacking for sharpness having been forced to miss their last two league matches through injury.

And with Atletico holding the advantage in the title race, the onus is on Real to play on the front foot and make things happen.

Diego Simeone’s hosts are renowned for their defensive organisation and this season has proved no different with them conceding only 16 goals across their 24 league matches.

Only five of their 12 home league games have rewarded backers of over 2.5 goals and visits from Barcelona and Sevilla – second and fourth respectively – resulted in slender wins of 1-0 and 2-0.

This has been a notoriously low-scoring fixture with only one of the last eight La Liga rivalries featuring three or more goals and Atletico, masters at frustrating their opponents, will be happy to keep things tight.

Real’s frontline hasn’t exactly been firing on all cylinders, though, with only five of their last 15 league contests going over 2.5 goals and we expect defences to again come to the fore in this title tussle.

Five of the last eight La Liga meetings ended as draws and three of those were goalless, so we are predicting this to finish 0-0 at a nice price.
