Draw 2-2

Reason for tip

Marseille won each of last season’s two encounters 3-2 thanks to goals in the 95th minute in Lyon and 85th minute at home. They deserved three points at home, but were fortunate to win on the road and a 2-2 draw here might reflect how open, attacking and closely-matched the two teams have been recently.

Mason Greenwood To Score Anytime

Reason for tip

Mason Greenwood scored seven goals in pre-season and opened the scoring for Marseille against Paris FC last weekend. Only Olivier Giroud currently has a higher xG in Ligue 1. He also scored in the club’s 3-2 home win over Lyon in February.

Lyon vs Marseille Predictions

  • At least three goals have been scored in eight of Lyon’s last 11 Ligue 1 matches
  • At least three goals have been scored in nine of Marseille’s last 11 league contests
  • Marseille won each of last season’s two encounters 3-2

In-form attacking stars could shine again

Marseille will look to repeat last season’s Ligue 1 successes against Lyon when they meet at Groupama Stadium on Sunday evening. The match of the round in France pits 100 percenters Les Gones against an entertaining but combustible Roberto De Zerbi-led side.

This match could be Georges Mikautadze’s last in Lyon colours as the club seek to raise funds by selling one of their top stars. The Georgian striker, alongside Malick Fofana, has been a shining light so far this season, scoring the winner in their opening-weekend win at Lens.

Marseille’s attack looks just as formidable right now with Mason Greenwood and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang both on target in their 5-2 win over Paris FC last weekend. Greenwood had a prolific pre-season too and narrowly wins the anytime goalscorer pick over the ex-Arsenal frontman here.

Goals on the cards at Groupama Stadium

And there should be a few goals. Both teams’ recent records show a strong correlation with at least three goals in the game.  Marseille’s last 10 Ligue 1 games have produced an average of 4.2 goals while Lyon’s last 10 league matches have featured 32 strikes.

Les Phoceens won both encounters with Lyon by the same 3-2 scoreline last term, but the stoppage-time goal hero in the corresponding fixture has now been sold. Marseille stuck Jonathan Rowe on the transfer list after he fought Adrien Rabiot in the dressing room after their 1-0 defeat to Rennes a fortnight ago. Rabiot has also been transfer listed but remains at the club.

Although they may potentially miss some quality amid injuries to Luiz Henrique and Igor Paixao, Marseille always tend to create openings through their high press. Lyon could have the edge in central midfield, however, so it is hard to separate these teams in terms of the final result with a 2-2 draw perhaps on the cards.
