Bayer bid goodbye to Alonso

Bayer Leverkusen are out of form, but they look good value to get back on track with an away win at Mainz on Saturday as they look to end manager Xabi Alonso’s reign in style before he departs for Real Madrid.

Leverkusen are second in the Bundesliga, four places and 17 points above sixth-placed Mainz, with 19 wins, 11 draws and three losses from their 33 games this season.

Bayer Leverkusen will expect to get on the scoresheet, having scored three goals or more in 11 of their 33 Bundesliga games this season. They have also averaged two goals a game in their 15 matches against other top-half teams.

Bayer Leverkusen are unbeaten in their last 33 away games and have gone 16 without losing this season. They have won 19 of their last 44 on the road, losing just twice in that run.

The hosts are enduring a slump. Mainz have failed to win five of their last six Bundesliga home games and are without a win in four games at home.

Mainz have gone four home games without keeping a clean sheet, which will be music to the ears of Leverkusen’s attackers and also Leipzig, who would jump above them in the battle for Conference League qualification if they can better Mainz’s result on the final day.

Bayer Leverkusen have won the last two Bundesliga meetings with Mainz by the odd goal, and a 1-0 away win looks a decent correct-score bet.
