The Iron Ones need a resurgent performance

As we head towards the end of the Bundesliga season, the title race simply heats up with every round. Union Berlin were brought down a couple of pegs with a 3-0 defeat to the ten-time consecutive champions Bayern Munich last weekend, yet they have the opportunity to bounce back with a win against a struggling Cologne.

There’s a strong case for a Union resurgence if the story of their season is anything to go by, they’re yet to lose back-to-back league games and went on to win three of their four Bundesliga outings directly following a defeat.

That’s not all, as Union yet to record a home league defeat this season, winning seven and drawing three of their ten games here at Stadion An der Alten Forsterei. In fact, only Union and Bayern are yet to taste a home league defeat this term, so they’re certainly in good company.

Cologne are on the slide

Never before have Cologne beaten Union in a top-flight H2H, losing six of their seven prior encounters. If that’s not enough to strike fear into Billy Goat hearts, a pair of back-to-back defeats ahead of this with five unanswered goals therein should be.

Cologne aren’t quite in immediate danger of relegation, but their seven-point cushion ahead of the round could erode quickly if sides beneath them pick up. Even so, we don’t think this will be the day of a resurgent performance by Steffen Baumgart’s men.
