Bayern looking to end Mainz hoodoo

Bayern Munich travel to Mainz in the Bundesliga on Saturday as they bid to end their losing streak at the Mewa Arena.

Mainz have won each of the last three league meetings between these two sides at this venue, although Bayern have won in the DfB Pokal during that period, and their last Bundesliga victory came in the corresponding fixture last season back in April.

It has been a miserable start to the season for the hosts and they have just two points to show from seven games so far, but their record against Bayern means they can’t be discounted entirely here.

Both teams to score a strong option

Goals at both ends has been a feature of this fixture and in each of the last eight league meetings between Bayern and Mainz both teams have scored.

That pattern could well continue on Saturday as goals haven’t necessarily been the issue for Mainz. Die Nullfunfer have scored in six of their eight games across all competitions, while Bayern have conceded in seven of their last nine away games stretching back to last season.

Both teams have scored in three of Bayern’s last four away games games and in three of Mainz’s last four overall, so there is a good chance both keepers will be beaten here.

Mainz may have a strong record against Bayern but the visitors’ form is hard to ignore. The Bavarian giants are unbeaten in 10 games since losing the Super Cup to RB Leipzig, winning eight of those, and can claim a 3-1 victory here – as they are scoring on average 3.3 goals-per-game and Mainz have shipped 19 in their seven games.

Harry Kane drew a blank against Freiburg last time out but did provide an assist. The Bayern man struck twice for England against Italy during the international break and can get back among the goals for his club on Saturday.
