Tip Reasoning

  • Manchester City have won each of their last three competitive home games 5-0.
  • RB Leipzig  lost 4-1 at home to Bayern at the weekend and have five defeats in their last seven away games.
  • Leipzig lost three of their four Champions League games against Premier League teams last season.

City can overpower Leipzig

Manchester City get their Champions League campaign underway with a home game against RB Leipzig as they bid to go one better after losing in the final last season.

City were perhaps suffering from a European hangover in the early stages of the season as they lost the Community Shield to Leicester and then their Premier League curtain raiser to Spurs, but they’ve responded well with three wins in a row – scoring 11 goals without reply during that run.

Leipzig have struggled to get going under new boss Jesse Marsch after Julian Nagelsmann departed for Bayern Munich at the end of last season.  The German club have lost three of their four Bundesliga games so far, winning the other, and could be in for a tough night in Manchester on Wednesday.

Expect a convincing win for the hosts

City have played two home games this season and have won both 5-0.  Pep Guardiola’s men may not win by quite that margin against their first European opponents of the new campaign but they can still win with some room to spare and my main tip for this contest is a home win with a -1 handicap.

The Premier League champions won all six of their home games in the Champions League last season and five of those successes came by at least two goals.  Leipzig were thrashed 4-1 at home by Bayern Munich at the weekend and have lost five of their last seven competitive away games stretching back into last season, including both of their Bundesliga trips this term.

Leipzig unlikely to trouble City’s backline

Die Rotten Bullen came up against Premier League opposition twice in Europe last season, losing 5-0 at Manchester United in the group stages and then 2-0 at Liverpool in the first knock-out round, failing to score in three of their four meetings with English teams in total.

Leipzig are yet to score on the road in the Bundesliga and they are unlikely to create too many chances in Manchester.  City have managed three clean sheets in a row and are yet to concede at home this season and can keep that record intact when the German outfit visit on Wednesday, with a 4-0 home win having some appeal in the correct score market.

A Gundogan goal has potential

Ilkay Gundogan has one goal in five games for City this season but the German playmaker did have a good scoring record in the Champions League last year with three goals in 12 outings.  The midfielder also tends to enjoy playing against teams from his homeland and scored in the home leg of the knock-out tie against Borussia Monchengladbach last season and provided an assist in the following round against Borussia Dortmund when they visited the Etihad Stadium.
