Melbourne City vs Western Sydney Wanderers Predictions

  • Melbourne City have picked up nine points from their last five games, moving back into second place.
  • Western Sydney Wanderers lost last weekend, ending their run of unbeaten games at four.
  • Melbourne City have scored 36 times this season, an average of 1.8 goals per game but have conceded 29 times.
  • Western Sydney have scored 25 times this season, conceded 28 times.

Second place the goal for City now

Melbourne City will now have given up on any thoughts of the title this season with Sydney holding a 10 point lead with two games in hand but they will be full focused on claiming second place. They’ve been in decent form recently with three wins from their last five although losses against Wellington and Adelaide in that period have set the side back slightly.

City have scored 36 times, an average of 1.8 goals per game, making them the second highest scorers in the A-League this season but their defensive record has let them down this year. They’ve conceded 1.45 goals per game this season, more than any other side in the top six at the moment.

Western Sydney need to get back to winning ways

Western Sydney had been in good form prior to their loss to Brisbane Roar last weekend, moving into the top six and going four games unbeaten. That loss last weekend demonstrated how close the race for finals series football is this season though with the side now sitting three points outside of the coveted sixth place.

Wanderers have struggled for goals over the course of the season, averaging just 1.31 goals per game this season but they have improved on this in recent weeks, seeing that average rise to 2.2 goals per game over their past five games.

Goals galore in store this weekend

This match looks as though it could give us plenty of goals as two freescoring sides meet. Picking a winner is a hard task but there should be loads of chances for both sides in this game. We’re backing there to a glut of goals with both teams scoring and over 2.5 goals in this game.

This could be a real classic as two sides with decent form in recent weeks and a real eye for goals come together. We think there could be plenty of goals for both sides but home advantage, and a slightly better run of games in recent weeks, should give Melbourne City a slender 3-2 win.
