Mexico to maintain strong defensive record

Defending champions Mexico will look to step up their bid for as 12^th CONCACAF Gold Cup crown against Honduras on Sunday and El Tri should win through their quarter-final tie against Honduras a shade cosily.

Mexico were far from spectacular in the group stage which began with a lifeless 0-0 stalemate against Trinidad and Tobago, but Gerardo Martino’s men got the job done against Guatemala (3-0) and El Salvador (1-0) to comfortably secure their passage through to the last eight.

El Tri didn’t look like conceding in any of those games and they’ve now kept clean sheets in eight of their last ten starts, which have generated eight wins and two draws.

They should find a way past an average Honduras outfit who beat Grenada (4-0) and Panama (2-3) in their first two group outings, before succumbing to a 0-2 defeat against invitees Qatar.

That result is perhaps an accurate measure of where the Hondurans’ limitations lie and while this is far from the best Mexico side we’ve seen down the years, we think Martino’s side can seal victory in Arizona without conceding, with 2-0 looking the most likely score-line.
