Middlesbrough vs Charlton Predictions

  • Despite losing 4-0 last weekend, things are looking better for Middlesbrough.
  • Charlton have failed to win their last 6 trips, losing 3 of the last 4.
  • The Addicks have conceded 2+ goals in 5 of their last 6 away games.
  • Boro have won 5 of their last 6 clashes with Charlton here.

Teammates Turned Rivals

Having climbed to 20th in the table, could Middlesbrough continue their comeback? The hosts are fresh from a 4-0 thumping against Leeds, but that heavy loss shouldn’t be too much of a setback after they got back to winning ways at the Riverside.

With Charlton struggling in this visit to Middlesbrough, there’s a chance for the hosts to add another three points. Former teammates Jonathan Woodgate and Lee Bowyer clash on the touchline here, but who will edge this battle of the strugglers?

Charlton’s Fall From Grace

Things have turned sour in the second tier for Bowyer, who had enjoyed a strong start after promotion. After picking up seven points from their first three away league games this season (W2 D1), Charlton have picked up just two from their last 18 available on the road (W0 D2 L4). The hosts are winless in seven, coming here with four defeats in five.

Charlton have conceded at least two goals in five of their last six away matches. They’ve shipped two or more goals in each of their last four matches, which has exposed some deeper issues that Bowyer needs to fix. With the away side falling down the table, there’s little surprise that Middlesbrough are favourites for the points.

Boro Bounce

Meanwhile, Middlesbrough have only won one of their last 12 Championship games (D5 L6), though it was their last such home match against Barnsley (1-0). Their return to form at home comes just as they reunite with Charlton, a side who they’ve had a hold over in recent years. Middlesbrough have won five of their last six home matches against Charlton in all competitions (W5 D1).

This will be the first league meeting between Middlesbrough and Charlton since March 2016, with the Addicks winning 2-0. However, that game came at the Valley and was yet another home win. The side at home hasn’t lost a meeting between these two since Boro’s away win back in 2013, with the Riverside outfit winning four of the last six clashes overall. Given that record, plus Charlton’s recent away woes, we think that the home win is good value here.

Charlton head into this clash having seen both teams score in each of their last five away trips. The Addicks have been high scoring overall, with over 2.5 goals in nine of their last 10 matches. Following that run and given the visitors recent streak of goals conceded, we are going with a 2-1 home win as our correct score prediction in this one.
