Dundee can virtually seal their place in the second round of the League Cup with a win over League One Montrose on Wednesday night.

The Dens Park outfit have begun this season in the same form that they enjoyed towards the back end of their 2020-21 promotion campaign.

The Premiership side were by no means second best in a 2-2 pre-season draw with West Ham, before thumping Brora Rangers 4-0 in their opening League Cup game.

James McPake’s side then got the weekend off when Ross County forfeited their next match, leaving them one win away from the next round.

McPake has added ex-Celtic striker Cillian Sheridan to his squad to replace the departed Osman Sow, but hitman Alex Jakubiak is back in the goals again and winger Paul McMullen has been on fire.

Behind them, the Dark Blues have Charlie Adam – arguably the best passer in Scottish football – to create the chances.

Dundee shouldn’t slip up to the Gable Endies this week with Montrose having lost to League Two Forfar on penalties last time out.

Unable to score in 90 minutes against a team from a lower level, Montrose may struggle to notch against a side two levels above – but stranger things have happened.

However, we still think Dundee can cover a -1 handicap at Links Park whether the hosts score or not and are forecasting a 2-0 win for the visitors.
