Morocco vs Benin Predictions
As one of the leading contenders to win this tournament, there will be plenty of eyes on Morocco as they kick off the second round of the Africa Cup of Nations. They face off with Benin in Cairo this weekend, but can the Atlas Lions make a huge statement of intent with a strong display in this clash? While they’ve picked up results in Egypt so far, they could do with stepping up their level of performance as we approach the business end of the tournament. Will they rise to the occasion?
Morocco have a 100% record coming out of the group stage, which impressive given that they were drawn alongside Namibia, Ivory Coast and South Africa. Topping that pool has put Morocco in a strong position, while it has earned them a lot of credit as we move towards the final stages of the competition. While they could use a little more attacking flair, this hasn’t been that kind of tournament. We’ve seen a lot of strong defensive displays, so it could be Morocco’s time.
Benin have produced their fair share of solid displays at the back after back-to-back goalless draws took them to the last 16. They were able to take a point off Ghana, Guinea-Bissau and a Cameroon side who were basically through, so it wasn’t the toughest set of sides. Benin qualified in third place, but can they make the leap into the last eight this weekend?
Benin need to reverse recent history, as they’ve lost their last three matches against Morocco going into this clash. After their third-place finish, Benin have been made outsiders for this meeting. Their failure to score a goal in their previous two matches is obviously a factor. It was an issue in qualifying, as they recorded one point and one goal from three away trips.
Benin have scored in just one of their last five Africa Cup of Nations games. On top of that, they’re facing a Morocco side who have kept three straight clean sheets. We think the favourites will rely on their strong defensive shape once again, so we’re backing them for more success. We are going with Morocco to win this encounter to nil on Friday.
