Tip Reasoning

  • The Netherlands have won their last seven competitive matches on home soil.
  • Turkey have won only one of their last five matches (3-0 v Gibraltar).
  • The Netherlands have scored three or more goals in five of their last nine matches.
  • The Dutch scored four without replay against the same team (Montenegro) that had drawn 2-2 in Turkey days before.

Dutch can avenge disaster in Istanbul

The Netherlands got their World Cup qualifying campaign back on track with a 4-0 thrashing of Montenegro on Saturday that ought to make Tuesday’s meeting with Turkey easier to navigate.

Revenge will be in the air at Johan Cruijff Arena as Oranje are still smarting from the 4-2 beating they took in Turkey back in March in the first round of group fixtures.

Much has changed in Dutch football since then as Louis van Gaal is back in charge for the third time and the 4-3-3 formation is in use again.

Van Gaal’s players executed his tactics very well on Saturday with Denzel Dumfries back to his best raiding forward down the right and Memphis Depay clinical in finishing off chances up front.

Virgil van Dijk is likely to return to the line-up against the Turks with it possible that only Daley Blind survives from the back four and keeper that started the defeat in Istanbul.

It would be a huge surprise if Turkey can repeat that winning performance in Amsterdam as it owed much to sloppy Dutch play and a hat-trick from 36-year-old Burak Yilmaz, who has scored one goal in his last five internationals.

Turkey have the talent to qualify from this group, but we feel this is not a time to be backing any team against the dangerous Dutch, who have won their lats seven games on home soil.

Senol Gunes’ side slipped up at home to Montenegro prior to the Gibraltar win and they may not yet be fully over their dismal Euro 2020 Finals showing.

The Netherlands, therefore, should justify their string favouritism and we are taking them to win 3-0 because of Saturday’s impressive 4-0 win over the same nation that held Turkey at home a few days before.
