Reason For Newcastle vs Brighton Predictions

  • Newcastle and Brighton drew in five of their last six meetings.
  • Just four goals in total were scored in those six encounters.
  • Brighton averaged 1.0 goal per away game last season in the Premier League.
  • Newcastle averaged 1.05 goals per 90 minutes of league action at home last term.

Newcastle start in style

The feelgood factor at Newcastle is strong right now after the Magpies started the 2020/21 season with successive wins and clean sheets last week.

A flurry of late transfer activity in the run up to the start of the new Premier League campaign had already lifted spirits at the club, and a fine 2-0 triumph at West Ham, marked by debut goals from Callum Wilson and Jeff Hendrick, added to the Magpies early momentum.

Newcastle were far less convincing with a changed team in midweek however, when they eked out a 1-0 win against Blackburn in the Carabao Cup, despite racking up just five attempts to their visitor’s 16, though another debut effort – this time from Ryan Fraser – ensured the overall positive trend continued.

Promise in defeat for Brighton

Brighton were turned over 3-1 by a new-look Chelsea team in their first Premier League outing of the new campaign, though the final scoreline was a pretty poor reflection of proceedings and Albion’s performance.

The Seagulls enjoyed more possession and had more attempts than their somewhat fortuitous visitors, who plundered their goals via the penalty spot, a long-range screamer from a fullback and a deflected effort from a centre-half.

To their credit, Brighton bounced back in mid-week with a fine 4-0 win over Portsmouth in the Carabao Cup, and despite their opening day setback, Graham Potters’ charges will travel to the North East with confidence.

Magpies and Seagulls to cancel each other out

Newcastle and Brighton have proved a match for each other in recent seasons, as evidenced by their largely dour encounters in the Premier League last term.

United and Albion played out two uneventful 0-0 draws in their brace of top-flight tussles in 2019/20, and in total, just three goals have been scored in six games between the clubs since Brighton’s promotion in 2017.

Four of those fixtures finished all square, while Brighton, unbeaten against Newcastle for three years, won the other two with slender 1-0 victories.

Head-to-head contests between Newcastle and Brighton have proved that the teams are extremely well matched, and their early season performances this term suggest there is every chance they will cancel each other out again on Sunday.

With that considered, the draw is favoured again at the prices available, while our correct score prediction of 1-1 forecasts an improvement on last season’s drab meetings.

After some personnel and tactical reshuffles over the summer, both Newcastle and Brighton’s goal-threat has visibly improved. Both teams found the net in each of their first two competitive tests of the 2020/21 season, and a goal a-piece this weekend should be within their capabilities.
