Mourinho has yet to convince despite victories

Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid circus stops off at Camp Nou for the season’s first Clasico against Barcelona on Sunday. They do so without Vinicius Junior, suspended for pulling Villarreal midfielder Nathan Saliba’s hair and receiving an extra game for his aggressive response to the referee’s decision following a VAR intervention.

Real were perhaps justified in their frustration about learning of the punishment just hours before their Champions League visit to Roma.
Mourinho enjoyed his returning hero’s reception at the Olimpico, then suggested it was all part of his plan to be two goals down before surging to a 4-3 win.

Real have rattled off 4-1 wins over Sevilla and RB Leipzig since, but the jury remains out on Mourinho’s return to the Spanish capital.

Cohesive Catalans to bounce back

Things are considerably quieter for Barcelona, despite their defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday. While they surrendered their winning streak in the French capital, Saturday’s 5-2 win at Real Betis made it nine wins from nine in La Liga.

Hansi Flick is doing a fine job, and of the seven Clasicos since his 2024 appointment, Barca have lost only one, at the Bernabeu this time last year.
That was the night Real’s then-coach Xabi Alonso subbed Vinicius. Despite winning, the board turned on him for deigning to put the team ahead of star names.

The incident epitomises the contrast: Barcelona are a cohesive outfit, while Real’s tactical uncertainty increasingly forces them to rely on individual brilliance.

Hostile reception for the Special One

Mourinho, famously dubbed the “translator” after previous Blaugrana coaches used his admirable linguistic skill, has never forgiven the club for overlooking him and appointing Pep Guardiola in 2008.

Like everything, this is personal, and it showed when he tried to go toe-to-toe with Guardiola’s Blaugrana in his first Clasico as Real coach in 2010, only to be outclassed 5-0.

The crowd will target him; he may respond, and controversy seems inevitable. But while Real are volatile in his image, Flick’s side reflects his composure, and it is difficult to envisage anything other than a comfortable home win.

Barca haven’t dropped points in a home league game since May 2025, while Mourinho’s side have already suffered away defeats at fellow top four sides Real Betis and Atletico Madrid.
