- St James Park
- Both teams have scored in eight of Newcastle’s nine Premier League games this season.
- Chelsea have won seven of their nine league outings this term.
- Chelsea’s wing-backs have scored six league goals between them this season.
Magpies await January spending spree
Newcastle’s post-Bruce era got off to an underwhelming start last weekend as they played out a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace and the prospects of the Magpies ending their winless start to the season look bleak as they host Premier League leaders Chelsea on Saturday.
Newcastle have picked up just four points from a possible 18 so far this season and were eliminated in the Carabao Cup at the first time of asking.
There have been some promising moments, but overall it’s been a dismal start to the campaign and the Toon Army faithful will be eager to see the start of the January transfer window.
Table-topping Blues to continue winning run
Chelsea are enjoying a much more productive first half of the season than their hosts, with the reigning European champions sitting top of the Premier League after nine games and heading into this tie after thumping Norwich 7-0 last weekend.
The Blues did require penalties to beat Southampton in midweek but they have lost just two of their 15 competitive games this season and in the Premier League they have won seven of their nine matches.
They are justified favourites for Saturday’s clash, but their defence could come under pressure. Newcastle, for all their problems, have scored in eight of their nine league matches so far and Chelsea have conceded in five of their last eight in the league.
Chilwell to get among the goals again
With this in mind, backing both teams to find the net looks solid value but I’m not expecting an upset. Chelsea are on fire right now and have scored 12 goals across their last three games, so a 3-1 correct score prediction also holds some appeal.
Chelsea’s wing-backs are also worth considering in the anytime goalscorer market. Ben Chilwell (3), Reece James (2) and Marcos Alonso (1) have scored six of Chelsea’s 23 league goals this season and it’s clear Tuchel favours using them as major attacking outlets, especially with Romelu Lukaku sidelined.
Chilwell is the preferred option on the left at the moment and has scored in each of their last three league games, so he’s a fantastic price to add to his tally on Saturday.
Newcastle predicted lineup: Darlow; Krafth, Lascelles, Clark; Manquillo, Longstaff, Hayden, Almiron, Ritchie; Saint-Maximin, Wilson
Chelsea predicted lineup: Mendy; Azpilicueta, Silva, Rudiger; James, Kovacic, Jorginho, Chilwell; Mount, Hudson-Odoi; Havertz
- There have been over 3.5 goals in four of Newcastle’s nine Premier League matches this season
- Chelsea have won their last three Premier League matches
