Newcastle vs Nottingham Forest Predictions

  • Bruno Guimaraes scored three goals in five home league starts last term
  • Forest have spent big to improve an attack which ranked third in the Championship last term
  • Newcastle won seven of their final eight home games last season

Forest making a statement

There are only three current top-flight sides who can say they’ve won their last three Premier League games. Liverpool and Tottenham are two of them, after their desperate run-ins last term. Nottingham Forest are the other, although they’ve been waiting 23 years to extend that run to four.

The two-time European champions have made a noisy return to the top-flight with an incredibly busy transfer window. They’ve spent big and bought more than a team’s worth of players in a bid to get ready for Premier League football.

It’s odd to look at this game and be focused on Forest’s business, given the riches available to Newcastle. They finished last season on a high note with a great finish, but they haven’t really pushed any boundaries in the window. Will that impact their start?

Where do Magpies go from here?

Newcastle have brought Nick Pope and Sven Botman to the club this summer, while they’ve made Matt Targett’s stay permanent. Those are solid but unspectacular moves, which have slightly dampened the optimism built up by the turnaround from Eddie Howe’s side since the turn of the year.

Newcastle fans are at pains to tell anyone who will listen that they aren’t expecting superstar signings and a top-four finish. They did do some good January business too, which means they don’t need to panic buy anytime soon.

Adding Bruno Guimaraes was a shrewd addition and he managed to score three goals at St James’ in five league starts. The potential signing of James Maddison might limit his attacking output in the future, but Guimaraes looks set to break from midfield this weekend and that makes him a great anytime scorer option.

Big spending Forest pack a punch

Newcastle have already won more league games in 2022 (12) than in both 2020 (9) and 2021 (8). That means Steve Cooper’s Forest have an incredibly difficult opener on their hands, even after spending close to £100million.

However, it was the free transfer for Jesse Lingard which has caught the eye for Forest. He’s set to start behind a front two of Brennan Johnson and new addition Taiwo Awoniyi, making the visitors a dangerous side. Forest also have improved at wing-back, signing Neco Williams and Harry Toffolo.

Only the top two outscored Forest in the Championship last term and neither of them have made anything like the attacking improvements of Cooper’s side. The only worry for Forest early on is how well they’ll gel at the back, which does offer the edge to a settled Newcastle attack.

Toon to edge it

I’m not too convinced by the prospect of Dan Burn and/or Fabian Schar at the back and Forest’s spending should make them strong enough to break through. Howe is set to stick with attack-minded full-backs in a back-four and Forest’s options could exploit that, so I’m going for both teams to score.

Nottingham Forest have lost each of their last six away league games against Newcastle and the Magpies finished last term with seven wins from their final eight at home. Back them to come away with the points, with a 2-1 victory my correct score prediction.
