NI get O’Neill boost ahead of June friendlies
Northern Ireland missed out on this summer’s World Cup, but news of a new contract for manager Michael O’Neill has brought some positivity ahead of their bid to make Euro 2028.
O’Neill spent the back-half of last season with Blackburn Rovers in the Championship, but he departed Ewood Park and signed a four-year deal with the IFA as he looks to build a new Northern Ireland side.
Call-ups for uncapped teenagers Kieran Morrison, Braiden Graham, and Ceadach O’Neill show the direction of travel for NI.
However, there’s an exciting future ahead, with Southampton’s Shea Charles, West Brom’s Isaac Price, and Tottenham’s Jamie Donley bringing a technical quality that was missing from O’Neill’s side during his first spell in charge.
NI have been more reliable going forward since O’Neill returned, failing to score in only three of their last 15 fixtures.
The Guinea side they face in Spain has kept one clean sheet in six, but they’ve also scored 12 goals across their last eight internationals. With O’Neill set to name an inexperienced backline, their usual defensive solidity might desert them.
