Panama vs Uruguay Predictions
It was a very odd summer for Panama and one that is hard to really quantify. Incredibly they drew all 6 of their Gold Cup matches 1-1 in normal time and that tells you a lot about the sort of side they are. Panama are slightly limited in an attacking sense and without real star quality but are very consistent performers and tough to beat.
They have mixed it with the United States and Mexico at the business end of the Gold Cup for several tournaments in succession so their showing in July came as no surprise. They were left crying foul play after going out to Mexico in highly controversial circumstances in the Semi-Final but bounced back to beat USA on penalties to claim 3rd place.
Those sort of results suggest they should be capable of giving Uruguay a very good game, especially with home advantage. In many respects Uruguay are South America’s equivalent of Panama. They are always well organised and tough beat but unlike their opponents possess one or two players of genuine world class ability that make them dangerous opposition for even the best sides in the world on their day.
However in this friendly, they will still be without Luis Suarez while Edinson Cavani and Abel Hernandez are also absent which leaves them quite light up front. In Diego Rolan and Christian Stuani they have capable deputies but they’ve only 6 international goals between them in a combined 33 starts and you sense the Panama defence will fancy themselves to keep them quiet.
Therefore you can certainly see a Panama side that very rarely lose football games getting a result here and you can back them to do that at 17/20.
The flip-side is that Panama are draw specialists and they may struggle to break down an excellent Uruguayan defence that is likely to be spearheaded by captain Diego Rodin and the very promising Jose Gimenez, who he partners at the back for Atletico Madrid.
In summary, there aren’t likely to be many goals in this game and it could well end goalless and you can back that to be the case at 8/1.
