Plymouth Argyle vs Grimsby Predictions

  • Grimsby are without an away clean sheet since Ian Holloway took over as manager.
  • Grimsby have scored in 100% of their away matches since Ian Holloway joined.
  • Plymouth have scored in all but one of their home matches against bottom-half teams.
  • Three or more goals have been scored in seven of Plymouth’s ten home games against bottom-half teams.

Plymouth in position

Under Ryan Lowe, Plymouth have become promotion candidates at the first time of asking, though their bid to return to the third division has been derailed slightly over the last few weeks. Tuesday’s hosts are now without a win in three, while they lost for the first time in five matches last time out.

Fortunately, this match is at Home Park, which is where the Pilgrims have been strong of late, winning seven of their last 11, losing just once during that time. Moreover, Plymouth have an excellent record against bottom-half teams at home this season, losing none of their ten matches against such opposition, winning seven of those ten.

Visitors up and down

Grimsby continue to be a bit up and down, consistency doesn’t seem to be their friend, especially at present, but there has been clear improvement since Ian Holloway took charge around the turn of the year. Before the EFL veteran took the reins, Grimsby were winless in 11, six of which they’d lost. They’ve now lost just four out of 13, winning six and drawing three of the other nine.

Unfortunately, things haven’t been so good on the road of late. Despite scoring no shortage of goals, notching eight in their last five travelling matches, Grimsby have won just one of their last five, two of which they’ve lost. Such a lack of wins is mainly down to an inability to keep teams out. The Mariners have shipped no less than ten goals in their last five away games. Defensive improvements are required.

Goals on the menu

Those going to Home Park hoping to see fireworks on Tuesday night may just find what they’re searching for. Punters can get a run for them money from this game by siding with ‘Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams to Score’. Plymouth have made light work of scoring goals at home this season, especially against bottom-half teams, notching in nine out of ten against such opposition. They’ve also scored two or more in nine of those ten games. Three or more match goals have been scored in seven out of ten. Combine this with the fact that Grimsby have been scoring lots on the road under Holloway, including four in two against top-eight opposition, and backing the goals to arrive in no small number makes plenty of appeal.

In the ‘Correct Score’ market, a 2-1 win for Plymouth appeals. Grimsby have conceded an average of two goals way against top-half teams since Holloway took charge but have scored exactly once in four out of six. Argyle have notched twice in five of their ten home games against bottom-half opposition.
