World Cup beckons for hosts
Portugal are closing in on a place at the World Cup, as they’ll qualify for the tournament this week if they beat Hungary and Armenia fail to win in Dublin.
Portugal are already five points clear with three games to go, as there’s been little in the way of opposition in this pool. Tuesday’s opponents Hungary, were beaten 3-2 at home by the Nations League winners, who have won all 13 qualifiers they’ve played under Roberto Martinez.
Portugal have been more open since their dour showing in Germany last year. They’ve kept only three clean sheets in 13 games post-Euro 2024, conceding eight times in 2025 alone.
Hungary will show more ambition than the Republic of Ireland had in their trip to Lisbon at the weekend. The visitors have scored at least twice in each of their last four games.
However, Hungary have lost four of seven games this year, while they’ve won only three of 13 games since struggling at the Euros. Back them to get a consolation goal as Portugal wrap up their place in North America with a month to spare.
