Rangers vs Braga Predictions

  • Rangers have scored the opening goal in their last four Europa League home games and led at HT & FT in three.
  • Sporting Braga have lost three of their five away Europa League games this season.
  • Braga have scored in four of their five away games in this competition this season.

Baby-faced Braga kin for a rude awakening

Rangers are the outsiders to qualify for the semi-finals after losing the first leg in Braga 1-0 and it will take a mighty effort from the Light Blues to turn the situation around at Ibrox. But Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men can take heart from the fact that Braga – like most Portuguese sides – have been poor travellers this season.

Carlos Carvalhal’s team have lost three and drawn one of their four road games in this competition and none of those were played in front of 40,000 vociferous Glaswegians. Braga earned their quarter-final berth with a 1-1 draw at Monaco in front of just over 10,000 fans separated from the pitch by an athletics track, so the atmosphere Carvalhal’s young squad will face is going to be vastly different.

And it is a young team that the Portuguese outfit will bring to Ibrox, probably featuring two teenagers in the wing-back positions, a 22-year-old anchoring the three-man backline and another 22-year-old leading the line up front. Rangers are unlikely to start with any player under the age of 25 and have the maturity and experience to handle this do-or-die occasion.

Roofe back in the groove just in time

The absence of Alfredo Morelos remains a concern, but it was vital that Kemar Roofe rediscovered his scoring touch with a hat-trick at St Mirren on Sunday as he will be carrying the burden up front. Roared on by the fans, we would expect Gers to make a fast start and cause trouble early in the game – as they have tended to do in this competition.

The Light Blues have scored the opening goal in their last four Europa League home games and led at the break and full-time in three, pointing us towards our main bet recommendation. However, they were indebted to Allan McGregor for the clean sheet against Red Star Belgrade, having conceded two at Ibrox in the previous round, so Braga could well add to their European away goals tally.

A 2-1 Rangers win is the preferred correct score play as the hosts have hit multiple goals in their last four home ties while Braga have conceded 1.6 per away game in the current edition of this competition.
