River Plate vs Colon Predictions

Wednesday’s Superliga Argentina action sees River Plate doing battle with Colon de Santa Fe at the Monumental. The hosts arrive as big favourites to claim all three points and will be expecting to do exactly that.

Whilst River are into the Copa Libertadores final and on course to be crowned king of South America for a second year in a row, they cannot move eyes towards next month’s showpiece clash with Flamengo, with several important domestic games to play first. Aiming to claim the Superliga title this season, Marcelo Gallardo’s troops cannot afford to drop points lightly, and games exactly like Wednesday’s are ones they need to be winning.

Currently 6th, with 18 points from 10 games, River’s start to the season has been solid but little more, currently 3 points behind leaders Boca. With some kind fixtures on paper approaching, the side have a real chance to get themselves in a commanding position and having won their last 2 home games via 2-0 margins, confidence can be high coming into this game.

Meanwhile, for the first time in their history, Colon also have a continental final to contend; into next month’s Copa Sudamericana decider where they’ll face Ecuadorians Independiente del Valle. Just like River however, Colon cannot afford to take their eyes off the domestic ball, as they’re at risk of being pulled into a relegation battle on the average points table.

Indeed, Colon didn’t perform well in the league last season and have put themselves in a spot of bother. It’s not hard to see where the team are struggling and for as long as their away record remains as terrible as it is, they’ll stay in a perilous position, travelling to Buenos Aires having lost 13 of their last 16 Superliga away games, including each of the last 7.

Ultimately, this is a match River will be targeting all 3 points in and it’s hard to picture them getting anything less. Man for man, they are stronger than Colon in all areas of the pitch and with the visitors showing absolutely no resolve on their travels, you’d have to fancy that to be more than apparent in what we see over the 90 minutes.

All things considered, it’s backing River to win to nil that’s captured our attention and is something we’re more than happy to do with maximum confidence. River have won 4 of their last 6 matches by 2-0 margins and that’s a scoreline we can see being repeated against a visiting outfit that is simply dreadful on the road.
