Rotherham vs Tranmere Predictions
The Millers endured a disappointing last-minute loss to Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup during the week, though they probably won’t be too disheartened ahead of this fixture, as they’ve won each of their last two in League One. In contrast, Tranmere come into this game off the back of a disappointing defeat, though they have had well over a week to prepare, which cannot be said for the hosts.
It’s been a bit of a slow start to the season for Rotherham, not because they’ve struggled, but because they’ve had two of their five matches postponed. From a performance point of view, the Millers have looked strong back at this level. They were reasonably comfortable winners against Wimbledon first time out, while even though they lost on match-day two, they were still the dominant side. When last in action, Paul Warne’s men found themselves in a real tough battle, but they had the offensive quality to get their noses in front, whilst also showing lots of defensive nous.
In contrast, Tranmere have struggled since returning to League One after their League Two play-off victory. Micky Mellon’s men did recently beat a destitute Bolton side, scoring five goals in the process, though we certainly shouldn’t read too much into that. In each of their other three matches, Rovers have found life tough, especially at the back.
On match-day one, as they scored twice, Tranmere offered a threat going forward, but they paid the price for being sloppy at the back, while their two travelling games have highlighted clear defensive weakness, while they’ve also lacked attacking power. In two away games, Saturday’s visitors have conceded four goals, have scored none. They’ve also conceded 4.34 expected goals and have created a rather pitiful 0.5. Such numbers do not bode well ahead of a trip to face a strong Millers side.
Given what we’ve seen from this pair so far, it’s very easy to support the hosts ahead of this match. Specifically, ‘Rotherham to Win & Over 1.5 Goals’ stands out as a solid option. Against opposition that has struggled massively at both ends of the pitch on the road, Rotherham are backed to score at least twice on route to what ought to be a relatively straightforward victory.
‘Correct Score’ players are pointed in the direction of a 3-0 home win. Rotherham are yet to notch three goals but this match against an open-looking side that has surrendered an average of 2.17 expected goals on the road represents a good opportunity for them to really hit their stride.
