Shamrock Rovers have a game in hand on their championship rivals and they have a golden opportunity to hit the summit of the Irish top flight by beating Drogheda at Tallaght on Thursday night. 

It has been a tricky spell for the Hoops, who have won only one of their last eight matches and suffered heartbreak in the bid to qualify for the Conference League. 

Stephen Bradley’s men snapped their poor run when beating Waterford 3-2 at Tallaght last time out, and while the scoreline indicates that was a closely-contested contest, the numbers suggest otherwise. 

Shamrock Rovers recorded 69 per cent possession against Waterford and they hit nine shots on target to the visitors four. 

Drogheda look a side of comparable ability to Waterford and this is a Tallaght tie that the Hoops should win. 

Drogs have won only four of 16 away league matches this term and the shot-shy Boynesiders have hit only 20 goals on their travels.
