Tip Reasoning

  • Southampton are unbeaten in their last 11 home games, in a run stretching back to September.
  • Saints have managed three wins in their last four home games in the Premier League.
  • West Hame have lost five of their last nine trips against Premier League opposition.
  • Saints are seeking a third consecutive clean sheet.

Premier League pair clash in FA Cup

Southampton and West Ham meet in an all-Premier League FA Cup fifth round tie on Wednesday in what could be a close game.

Both sides will feel they have a great chance of going all the way in this competition with just eight top flight teams left in the draw out of 16, and both go into Wednesday’s meeting in good form.

Southampton are unbeaten in six and have won three of their last four games. The Hammers are now unbeaten in five, although they were given a scare by Non-League Kidderminster in the previous round of the FA Cup as they needed a last-gasp winner in extra-time to avoid the lottery of a penalty shootout.

Home advantage gives Saints the edge

Saints have made their St Mary’s home a fortress this season and they’ve only lost once on home soil all season, a 1-0 defeat to Wolves back in September. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men are unbeaten in their last 11 games at home, with six wins and five draws. The south coast club were initially struggling for wins during that run but they have three victories in their last four Premier League home outings, and one draw with Manchester City, and that suggests they can get the job done inside the 90 minutes against West Ham in the Cup.

The Hammers may be on an unbeaten run of their own but on their travels results have been fairly poor of late. David Moyes’ side are winless in their last three away (D2, L1), including that extra time win at Kidderminster, and have lost five of their last nine trips against Premier League opposition.

Saints have had the better of the league meetings between the pair this season with four points, drawing at home and winning away, and they can maintain that dominance by claiming an FA Cup win on Wednesday.

A 2-0 win for the hosts is my correct score selection as Southampton have been strong defensively of late and go into this game on the back of consecutive clean sheets and they have scored eight goals in total over the course of their last four games, scoring exactly two goals in two of those matches.
