Tip Reasoning

St. Liege’s ascent up the Belgian league table continued last weekend when they went away to Anderlecht and returned victorious. Though Anderlecht are a team who’ve been struggling from a defensive point of view, that was no easy fixture, so for Ricardo Sa Pinto’s men to go and win convincingly was both impressive and a statement of intent. It may be late in the season, and they haven’t exactly been considered contenders until recently, but Liege are very much going for the title.

Having seemed absolute certs for the title just a month ago, Club Brugge continue to be in danger of falling off their perch at the top of the tree. They did regain the winning thread last time out, but with two matches to go they’ve not yet been crowned champions, which, given how dominant they were a few months ago, seems ridiculous. A point here would see Ivan Leko’s men claim the top prize, but a loss would mean that they go into the final weekend with just a single point lead.

Make no mistake about it, Liege are a force to be reckoned with at present. Before and after Christmas, Sa Pinto’s men were playing nice football and there was a hint that they were starting to come to the boil, but the last few months has seen them play some excellent stuff, especially in the final third. Having scored four away against Brugge just a few weeks ago, the hosts will fancy their chances on Sunday.

Since the league split, the current second place team have been by far and away the most impressive in the final third. They’ve passed the ball well, got forward with purpose and have really imposed themselves on matches. Having scored 19 goals in eight games, Liege are easily the top-scorers in the Championship Group, though it’s not just the goals that they’ve scored, no. The sheer chances created by Liege is what has really impressed in recent weeks.

With neither Liege nor Brugge possessing the sturdiest of back-lines, this match is likely to be settled in the final third. Frankly, based on recent performances, Liege are operating at a higher level from an offensive point of view. Their demolition of Genk in their last home match was particularly eye-catching. In contrast, Brugge failed to fire against that opponent, when drawing 1-1 with them a few weeks ago. What’s more, the hosts showed their quality when convincingly out-scoring Anderlecht at the weekend, which is also something that Brugge failed to do a few weeks back.

The pair couldn’t be separated when they shared eight goals in that thrilling encounter towards the end of April, though it was undoubtedly Liege who came out of that fixture in better shape. Not only did they go toe-to-toe with the league leaders, but they’ve since moved forward, while Sunday’s visitors have stagnated somewhat.

The way in which Ricardo Sa Pinto’s men dispatched of both Genk and Anderlecht created a very positive impression. If they can impose themselves against the league leaders, who’ve won just three of their last ten on the road and who managed to take just one point from a possible six against Genk and Anderlecht, then Liege will likely keep their title hopes alive by outscoring their visitors.
