Struggling Sweden not worth backing

Time is running out for Sweden, who risk following their absence from the 2022 World Cup with failure to qualify for Euro 2024.

As it stands, Sweden have just six points in Group F in Euro 2024 qualifying, leaving them four points adrift of the top two with four games to play.

Their qualifying campaign began with defeats to Belgium and Austria either side of a 5-0 win over Azerbaijan, meaning this international break would be particularly crucial.

And while Sweden started on the right foot with a 5-0 thrashing of Estonia on Saturday, they could struggle to follow up with victory over Austria.

Tight clash expected in Stockholm

Goals in the 81st and 89th minutes from Christoph Baumgartner handed Austria a 2-0 win over Sweden back in June, putting them in a strong position to qualify for Euro 2024.

That game was, however, tight and Austria may be content to settle for a share of the spoils when the teams reconvene in Stockholm.

Two of Austria’s last three games have finished all square – against Belgium and Moldova – and both of those matches also finished 1-1.

That looks like the best correct score prediction in this contest, in which Austria may be more focused on avoiding defeat than going for the win.
