      Under 2.5 Match Goals

      Reason for tip

Sitting 35th and 34th in the league-phase standings, Villarreal and Ajax look set to fall at the first hurdle in the Champions League regardless of Tuesday’s result. Neither can score goals, with the Yellow Submarine netting only four in the league phase and their visitors managing just one more, and a drab affair is expected.

      Draw 1-1

      Reason for tip

Villarreal are still searching for a maiden Champions League win of the season but Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Real Betis marked their fourth loss in six, suggesting that first victory is unlikely to arrive against Ajax, who have enough about them to earn a point in Spain.

      Villarreal vs Ajax Predictions

      • Villarreal have just one point after their first six Champions League matches
      • Ajax are only two points better off, winning one and losing the other five of their games
      • The struggling pair have scored only nine goals between them in the league phase

Strugglers staring down the barrel at elimination

With 77 wins from 134 games and a lifting of the trophy in 2021, Villarreal are one of the Europa League’s most successful sides. Their Champions League ventures have been far less prosperous, however, and this season’s efforts in Europe’s premier competition have been disastrous to say the least.

The Yellow Submarine are still searching for a first league-phase win after six games and they are hardly in the form to suddenly grab that elusive success, having lost four of their last six matches in all competitions.

Marcelino’s men need a win and plenty of results to go their way if they are to reach the knockout stage, but there is no guarantee that they can even achieve the former, even if they are playing a fellow struggler.

Underperforming pair primed for a cagey encounter

Ajax have gone one better than Villarreal by actually winning a Champions League match this term but having lost their other five European outings, they are equally hard to trust.

With both teams needing a win to have any chance of keeping their European journey going, a cagey encounter is expected at Estadio de la Ceramica.

Ajax have scored just five Champions League goals this season and with Villarreal netting one fewer, under 2.5 goals looks the bet at a big price.
