Wales vs Georgia Predictions

Wales are still flying high from an incredible run in Euro 2016 at the moment. They made it out of the group stages as winners and then managed to beat Northern Ireland and Belgium to make it to the semi-finals. This was the furthest of any of the home nations and went against all predictions, and despite their 2-0 defeat to eventual winners Portugal they can be very proud of their showing.

They picked up where they left off at the start of September as well with a 4-0 thrashing of Moldova, and on Thursday they played out the second of their World Cup qualification games. They picked up a point away to Austria, twice taking the lead but twice being pegged back by Marko Arnautovic.

This is by no means a poor result for Wales, and they remain top of the group with four points from their opening two games. They are ahead of Serbia, Austria and Republic of Ireland on goal difference alone though, so there is a lot of work to do if they want to make it to Russia in two years time.

Georgia sit second from bottom in the group with zero points, only ahead of minnows Moldova on goal difference. Unfortunately for them this isn’t exactly an unfamiliar position to be in. They have finished each of their last two qualification campaigns second from bottom, with the team not being quite as bad as the likes of Moldova, San Marino, and Andorra but in no way threatening to challenge the top spots.

It was more of the same for them in midweek as well as they lost 1-0 to Republic of Ireland. It was a relatively decent performance from them to be fair, with the visitors having plenty of the ball and carving out a few opportunities in front of goal. This followed on from an equally good performance at home to Austria, which ended in an equally unhelpful 2-1 defeat.

Georgia are definitely looking like an improved side recently, and it was only just before Euro 2016 that they managed an historic 1-0 win over Spain away from home. This is by far the best result in their history, and it also happens to be their only victory in the last nine games. They have lost six of these games, and away from home have lost seven of their last nine.

It’s hard to back against Wales here. They have looked an excellent side over the past year or so and scored four at home against Moldova last month. Three of Georgia’s last six away games have seen them lose by more than a single goal as well, so backing a Wales -1 Handicap Win at 10/11 looks a good bet to me. I’m going for a 3-0 correct score prediction at 6/1 as well.
