Walsall vs Cambridge United Predictions
After finishing 22nd in League One last term, Walsall find themselves in the same position in League Two after 17 games. It’s been an awful start for a side who could suffer back to back relegations on current form. The hosts come into this one aiming to change their fortunes, but can they pull themselves away from danger? The hosts need a turnaround in this clash, but Cambridge head here sensing an opportunity.
Walsall’s awful start has left them just two points clear of last place in the table, marking a dreadful return to the fourth tier. After 12 years in League One, the Saddlers aren’t exactly thriving post-relegation, but they might just get away with being poor. The demise of Bury means only one side will be relegated from League Two this season, a boost which Walsall could need on current form.
The visitors are in a much stronger position, 10 points clear of the drop and four points shy of the playoffs. That’s a solid place for Cambridge to be, especially following a few pre-season fears at the club. The visitors will be aiming to boost that position with a win here, as this is a rare chance for the visitors to take advantage of a struggling side on the road.
Cambridge have a middling away record – ranking 11th in the division. That’s seen them win three times on the road this term, but their fixture list hasn’t exactly been kind. They have already travelled to seven of the sides currently in the top half, while they’ve met only two of the 12 sides who are currently below them. Visiting Walsall should be Cambridge’s chance to dominate on the road.
After all, Walsall do have the league’s worst home record. They have just five points to their name from their matches at the Bescot, losing five times here. The hosts have lost each of their last three home games, having been beaten in in their last six League Two outings overall. That losing streak comes just as Cambridge returned to winning ways last weekend.
With the hosts losing 10 of 17 games this term we are confident in the visitors getting a win. As a result, we’re backing Cambridge for the points here while we’re going for a 2-1 victory for the visitors, who have seen over 2.5 goals in each of their away wins so far. With Walsall losing 2-1 in three of their last four league games, we think there’s value in a repeat here.
