Tip Reasoning

  • Southampton have won just two of their 12 competitive games this season.
  • Seven of these games have ended as draws after 90 minutes, including three 2-2 scorelines.
  • Watford have only lost two of their last six league meetings with the Saints.

Ranieri gets off the mark at Watford

Watford twice went behind at Goodison Park last weekend but, in a remarkable turn of events, scored four goals in the final 12 minutes to secure a valuable and dramatic three points against Everton to lift them six points above the relegation zone.

That ended the Hornets’ four game winless streak in all competitions and put Claudio Ranieri’s first points on the board, and he should be able to add to his tally when Southampton come to town on Saturday.

Saints struggle to win

The Saints were knocked out of the Carabao Cup on penalties in midweek and, following their draw with Burnley last weekend, have won just two of their 12 competitive games this season.

One of these came against League Two outfit Newport County in August and the other was a slender 1-0 win over a Leeds side that find themselves just outside the relegation zone.

Spoils to be shared at Vicarage Road

Watford have been far from perfect this season but they have won three times in the league and have only lost two of their last six league meetings with Southampton. Backing them in the double chance market looks a good value offering on Saturday.

I’m expecting the spoils to be shared, though. Seven of Southampton’s 12 competitive games this season have been level after 90 minutes and three of these have ended 2-2. With Watford conceding at least twice in five of their league games this season, another 2-2 draw is my pick for a correct score prediction.

Watford predicted lineup: Foster; Ngakia, Troost-Ekong, Cathcart, Masina; Sarr, Kucka, Sissoko, Tufan, Hernandez; King

Southampton predicted lineup: McCarthy; Livramento, Bednarek, Salisu, Perraud; Armstrong, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Djenepo; Redmond, Broja

  • Both teams have scored in seven of the last eight Premier League meetings between these sides
  • No team has had more Premier League games with over 3.5 goals than Southampton this season
