Wellington Phoenix vs Western Sydney Wanderers Betting Tips & Predictions

Wellington Phoenix’ hopes of reaching the Hyundai A-League playoffs ended quite some time ago now, and since then they’ve just been trying to get some more points on the board and end the season on a high.

It’s not gone well so far, and approaching their final match of the season they have just 25 points from 26 games, leaving them 15 points adrift of the top six. This comes after three consecutive defeats in the A-League, and at home they have lost five and won one of their last six matches.

Their problem has largely been defensively. Wellington Phoenix have conceded 24 goals in their last ten A-League matches, leaving them with the second worst defensive record in the league.

Western Sydney Wanderers have spent a significant portion of the season at the top of the A-League, but some lacklustre form in 2016 saw their competitors gain ground on them and ultimately overtake them.

Their hopes of an A-League Premiership title were alive until Friday, when an Adelaide United win saw them move four points clear of Western Sydney Wanderers down in 3rd. However, a win on Sunday could still see them end the season in 2nd position.

The visitors haven’t been in great form recently, but they should have what it takes to take three points off the defensively poor Wellington Phoenix. Five of the hosts’ last six home matches for Wellington Phoenix have seen three or more goals scored in them, but to be fair to the hosts they have only failed to score in one of them despite losing four.

This makes a high scoring match a likelihood, and odds of 5/6 for Over 2.5 Goals and Both Teams to Score look very good value. I’m backing the visitors to get the win though, and a 3-1 win for them at 11/1 looks good to me.
