Wellington Phoenix vs Western Sydney Wanderers Predictions

Wellington Phoenix started the season off in horrendous form in the Hyundai A-League, but they have managed a resurgence of sorts and find themselves well in contention for a playoff spot and a shot at the Championship title at the end of the season.

Their 2-2 draw at Adelaide United last weekend will come as a disappointment considering their hosts’ disastrous season and the fact they conceded an 80th minute equaliser, but they have still only lost two of their last nine matches.

Only three of these games have ended in victory for them, but the steady accumulation of points has taken them to 7th in the A-League table. They are only a point behind Perth Glory, so a win on Saturday could take them into the top six.

Western Sydney Wanderers are lurking around there too, sitting one point behind Wellington Phoenix and also within a win’s distance of the coveted top six. Also like their opponents, they have got to this position with a steady stream of draws.

Nine of their 17 league games this season have ended all square, with three wins and five defeats making up the remainder of the results. Away from home they have drawn four of their last eight in the league, whilst Wellington Phoenix have won four, drawn two, and lost two of their eight at home this season.

Almost all of the hosts’ goals come courtesy of Roy Krishna. The star striker has netted nine league goals this season, with Phoenix’s second highest scorer having just two. This makes him the prime choice for our anytime goalscorer predictions.

In terms of the overall result I think a stalemate could be on the cards here. These two sides have already drawn once in the league this season, and Western Sydney Wanderers haven’t lost to a side outside the top four all season. Their two away wins have come against the bottom two sides in the division, so it has been exclusively draws against sides of a similar strength to them. Odds of 13/5 look excellent value for money for a stalemate, and I’m backing that alongside a 1-1 correct score predictions at 6/1.
