Western United look for further debut season success

Western United, heading into the final game of the Australia A-League regular season, have already secured a noteworthy appearance in the A-League playoffs despite this being their first ever professional campaign.

This is largely thanks to a late run at the top six which has seen them win six of their last seven matches, pushing them into 5th position and three points clear of 7th placed Adelaide United.

Now, in this final game of the regular season, they are looking to boost their playoff hopes with a further bump up the table. Victory on Wednesday would see them finish 3rd and provide them an easier draw in the Elimination Finals, although they have to beat a Melbourne City side who have already secured the runners up spot.

However, the fact that City don’t need a result here could play into Western United’s hands. The favourites could well play a weakened team in anticipation of the playoffs and the lack of motivation could be a deciding factor.
