Western United vs Wellington Phoenix Predictions
- Western United are unbeaten in three ending their poor run of form where they experienced three losses in a row.
- Western United have averaged two goals a game over their good recent form, better than their season average of 1.27 goals per game.
- Wellington Phoenix are now six games unbeaten but have drawn their last two matches.
- Wellington Phoenix have averaged 1.3 goals per game this season, slightly less than their goals conceded over the course of the season.
Western United are the shock of the season so far; can the run go on?
Western United’s debut season in the A-League has gone better than anyone expectations, with the club sitting third eight points behind leaders Sydney FC. The side have performed well but have experienced dips in form, recently losing three in a row, but they have turned things around again going three games unbeaten.
Western United will be looking to claim another win here whilst they are the midst of their best form of the season so far. They are averaging almost a goal a game more in their past three games compared to the rest of the season and will be hoping to build that momentum for at least another week.
Wellington need another big result to keep performing above expectations
Many people had written Wellington Phoenix off after just four games of the season when they sat bottom without a point but a remarkable run of games has seen them unbeaten in six, form that has propelled them into the top 6 and playoff contention. This form has seen them knock the likes of Western Sydney Wanderers out of the playoff places and into a battle for finals football.
Their form over the last six games has proven that the side were better than their early season performances and they’ll be looking to prove this again, although a tough trip to Western United means picking up the three points could be easier said than done.
Do the points stay in Australia or head back to New Zealand
This season has shown that both of these sides have their vulnerabilities and they could both be exploited this weekend. We think this should be a very tight game and we are backing Wellington Phoenix to come out on top on the handicap market which is currently set at 0.5. A win or draw gets us our win and delivers a happy Christmas period to Phoenix.
We’re not confident that Wellington Phoenix will find all three points this weekend though and with both sides being in good form we think a draw could well be on the cards. Both sides have been slightly over performing in front of goal in recent weeks and a slight regression is expected from both teams. As a result, we’re opting for a 1-1 draw between these sides.
