Rennes to Win

Reason for tip

Rennes have won eight of their last 14 home games and progressed from their last six Coupe de France ties to have been played at Roazhon Park, suggesting they should be too strong for Marseille who only just got past minnows Thionville Lusitanos in the last round – narrowly winning 1-0 against the fifth-tier outfit.

Rennes 2-0

Reason for tip

Rennes were utterly dominant when beating Ligue 1’s second-placed side Nice 2-0 last weekend and, given Marseille have won only one of their last 12 league away matches, they should control proceedings and land a similarly convincing victory once again.

Rennes vs Marseille Predictions

  • Rennes have won eight of their last 14 home matches
  • Marseille’s only away win in 12 Ligue 1 road games came against bottom-of-the-table Lorient
  • Rennes have qualified from their last six Coupe de France home ties

Rennes can be ruthless at Roazhon Park

Ten-time Coupe de France winners Marseille have been in great form since late November, winning six of their nine matches since a 1-1 draw with Strasbourg, but they face a tough task if they wish to progress to the last-16 of this year’s edition of the competition.

They travel to Rennes on Sunday to take on a side who have won the competition three times and are on a three-game winning streak, with their latest victory being a 2-0 triumph over Ligue 1’s second-placed team Nice in a dominant display in which they won the shot count 15 to nine.

That victory means that the Red and Blacks have won eight of their 14 home games and their record at Roazhon Park is strong in the Coupe de France too, having qualified from their last six home ties in the competition.

Marseille’s road woes set to continue

Despite Marseille’s strong form in general, they have struggled on the road and could come unstuck on Sunday.

Gennaro Gattuso’s side have managed only one win in their last 12 Ligue 1 away games and, with that sole victory coming against basement boys Lorient, it looks likely their travel sickness will continue against a strong Rennes side.

Marseille did knock the Red and Blacks out of this competition at this exact stage last season, but that 1-0 triumph came at home and, given that they only just scraped by fifth-tier  Thionville Lusitanos in the last round, it could be a different story at Roazhon Park this time.
