The PGA Tour regular season draws to a close this week with players desperate to use the Wyndham Championship to earn a place in the FedEx Cup playoffs next week.

It’s expected to be a humid and thundery week in North Carolina as 156 players take to the Sedgefield Country Club and the competition at the sharp end of the market looks set to be fierce.

Wyndham Championship predictions & betting tips

Wyndham Championship winner prediction – Webb Simpson at 12/1

Webb Simpson, Hideki Matsuyama and Louis Oosthuizen are the first three names in the betting for this week’s PGA Tour event – the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina – and surely one man has more passion for the competition than the other two.

A slight neck strain in May kept Simpson out of the Wells Fargo Championship – the other PGA Tour event staged in North Carolina – but he is fully fit for this week’s home-state gig.

Simpson loves performing in front of his family and friends on a course he knows well and his Wyndham record is remarkable. Simpson’s Tour breakthrough came in the 2011 Wyndham at Sedgefield Country Club, and he has come mightily close to a second success on the track. Fifth place in 2014 was followed by sixth in 2015, third in 2017, second in 2018, second in 2019 and third in 2020.

The course lends itself to his tee-to-green accuracy and his razor-sharp short-game. After firing a brilliant closing round of 64 in the WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational last Sunday, there appears every chance of Simpson dominating this championship.

Matsuyama was the centre of attention in the Olympics in Japan and narrowly failed to win a medal, then he lost a playoff in Memphis on Sunday, so he may be running on empty. Oosthuizen has also suffered a series of near-misses and could be struggling mentally.

Wyndham Championship outsider prediction – Kevin Na eachway at 40/1

Preference as an each-way alternative to backing Simpson is for Kevin Na, a five-time PGA Tour champion who is well suited to this assignment.

Na has won four times from 2018 onwards and he has become one of the best in the world on and around the greens. Progressive Wyndham form figures of MC-18-10-4 suggest he could be building towards a trophy-winning week.
