The Premier League big boys enter the FA Cup this weekend as the third round gets underway and this is when many football fans finally start taking notice of the oldest football competition in the world.

The action begins on Friday as Manchester United host Everton before defending champions Liverpool begin their quest for back-to-back cup triumphs at home to Wolves on Saturday, while the biggest third round tie on offer is Chelsea’s trip to Manchester City on Sunday.

With the action almost upon us, I’ve rounded up a couple of my favourites for FA Cup glory this season.

FA Cup outright winner prediction – Newcastle

Newcastle are the form side in the entire top flight right now and, following their draw away to Premier League leaders Arsenal, they are now unbeaten in 15 matches across all competitions.

Few predicted just how rapid their rise through the ranks would be following their Saudi Arabia-led takeover but Eddie Howe has transformed the Magpies.

They are third in the table and a point adrift Manchester City, but the Gallowgate End faithful will be yearning for silverware. With no European football to distract them and a relatively easy third-round draw against Sheffield Wednesday, they are well-positioned to run deep in the FA Cup.

Newcastle have a respectable six FA Cups to their name but their last triumph came back in 1955 and they haven’t even reached a final since 1999. Eddie Howe could change all that in 2023.

FA Cup outsider prediction – Brighton

Brighton’s only previous FA Cup Final appearance came all the way back in 1983 as they took Manchester United to a replay before losing 4-0 but this could be the year they return to Wembley.

The Seagulls thrashed Everton last time out and have won five of their last eight in all competitions, including a Carabao Cup victory over Arsenal in November.

They have since exited that competition on penalties, but with a winnable third round tussle with Middlesbrough on Saturday and last season’s run to the semi-finals fresh in the memory they have an excellent chance of upsetting the odds.

Given their quality this season and the fact they sit in a comfortable eighth place in the Premier League, they look good value at 25/1.
