The first golf double-header of 2024 features the return of Rory McIlroy in a new event, the Dubai Invitational on the DP World Tour, while the Sony Open in Hawaii marks the second leg of the PGA Tour’s Opening Drive.
McIlroy is the red-hot favourite to claim the title at Dubai Creek Golf Club with European stars Ludvig Aberg, Matt Fitzpatrick and Tyrrell Hatton among the main contenders in the field at Waialae Country Club this week.

Dubai Invitational winner prediction – Nicolai Hojgaard at 10/1
McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood dominate the betting for the 60-runner Dubai Invitational, which is the first DP World Tour event staged at Dubai Creek since the 2000 Desert Classic.
Dubai Creek, a typical desert layout bearing the hallmarks of other courses in the region, saw winning scores of -13 and -14 in its two iterations of the Desert Classic but this is a pro-am so the set-up is likely to be easier with minimal winds forecast.
McIlroy, adept at playing just about any course, could make hay in relatively weak company but his one start since September – a 22nd-place finish in the DP World Tour Championship, also in Dubai – was far from spectacular and he’s bound to be rusty.
He will also have one eye on defending the Desert Classic next week and can be passed over at short odds, while Fleetwood finished 47th of 59 runners at The Sentry in Hawaii last week which, coupled with the long journey from the Pacific, was far from an encouraging return.
Instead, it could pay to back Nicolai Hojgaard to begin 2024 the way he finished 2023 with more DP World Tour glory after he claimed the DP World Tour Championship in November.
The PGA Tour will soon beckon for the young Dane but he’s shown himself to be a supreme performer in the desert having also claimed the Ras Al Khaimah Championship in February 2022.
He’s third-favourite behind the two big guns for good reason – his form figures from his last five DP World Tour events are 3-5-64-2-1 – and the bloodless manner of his win at the Earth Course on his most recent start suggests the best is yet to come.
Sony Open winner prediction – Brian Harman at 20/1
Eight of the last ten winners of the Sony Open had played The Sentry the week before and the betting market for the 2024 edition is dominated by those who had the chance to shake off the rust at Kapalua last week.
Aberg makes his Waialae debut this week as do Fitzpatrick and Hatton. Russell Henley, champion in 2013, is the only course debutant to triumph at the venue since Gay Brewer won the inaugural Hawaiian Open in 1965 and that’s reason enough to swerve the three favourites.
Open champion Brian Harman looks a much better option having advertised his form with a fifth-place finish last week.
Hoylake hero Harman is well suited to Waialae, a tight, short track which contrasts sharply with Kapalua, and it’s hard to explain why he hasn’t contended more frequently for this title, although he was fourth in the 2018 Sony Open.
What we do know about Harman is that the left-hander is in the form of his life, seemingly brimming with self-belief, and there’s every chance he can better that effort this week.
