John Deere Classic prediction – Russell Henley at 16/1

Cameron Young is probably the best player still looking for his first victory on the PGA Tour and he should be champing at the bit to take on such modest company at TPC Deere Run this week.

However, a tie for 32nd at the US Open has been his best performance in seven outings since he was seventh at the Masters, so it might not be the week to get carried away with the man who finished runner-up to Cameron Smith at last year’s Open at St Andrew’s.

The alternatives at the head of the market, however, look stronger and at the prices there is definitely no harm in backing Russell Henley to take this week’s crown.

This Illinois test is far from the most taxing on the PGA Tour and scores of 20-under or better are commonplace.

Paul Goydos also fired a round of 59 at Deere Run 13 years ago and it could easily turn into a putting contest.

Last year’s winner JT Poston was ranked top in strokes-gained: tee-to-green, and it should not take anything too spectacular to triumph, but Henley’s recent form gives cause for optimism.

He has become the embodiment of consistency with top-20 finishes in seven of his last eight strokeplay tournaments. And with so many of the big names giving this tournament a swerve, he has to come into consideration after his fourth at the Masters and 14th at the US Open.

He was 19th last time out at the Travelers Championship and also has course form in the book as he was second in 2019 and 11th on his last appearance two years ago.

Made in Himmerland prediction – Adrian Otaegui at 25/1

The Made in Himmerland has been moved from its September berth and there is little doubt most of the attention will revolve around Danish twins Rasmus and Nicolai Hojgaard as they look to claim a home victory.

With the pair hailed as two of the leading young talents on the DP World Tour, there is good cause for optimism, although other alternatives exist at some decent prices.

Four-time tour winner Adrian Otaegui was third in this tournament in 2016 and while that was a while ago, his game is solid enough to deal with the undulations at the Himmerland Golf & Spa Resort.

He won the 2021 Andalucia Masters and is ranked third in strokes gained from tee to green on the DP World Tour this year.

He is the most accurate driver on the circuit and there is a great chance he can improve on his performance at the KLM Open last time out, when his fellow countryman Pablo Larrazabal proved the only stronger player in the field.
