Phoenix Open & Qatar Masters tips with a 373/1 golf double

Phoenix Open & Qatar Masters tips with a 373/1 golf double

It’s a huge week for American sport and while attention will soon turn to the Super Bowl on Sunday evening, the Phoenix Open and its famously boisterous TPC Scottsdale crowd should serve up a fine opening course for those who like a punt on both golf and gridiron.

As the PGA Tour rolls on to Arizona, the DP World Tour completes a five-week stint in the Middle East with the Qatar Masters at Doha Golf Club.

Racing & Football Outlook golf tipster Joe Champion has analysed both events and put together an each-way double which pays out at 373/1.

We’ve priced this tip up with bet365 and new customers can take advantage of their sign-up offer using the button below.

Phoenix Open winner prediction – Justin Thomas at 10/1

The Phoenix Open has been downgraded from Signature event status in favour of last week’s Pebble Beach Pro-Am, a decision which has not paid off after that tournament finished a day earlier than planned due to terrible coastal weather conditions.

However, a number of stars are in attendance at Scottsdale’s Stadium Course, which is the long-time host venue for the most attended, and most raucous event in golf, best illustrated by the bearpit atmosphere of the enclosed par-three 16th hole.

The mass of spectators can add to the tension for Phoenix competitors and it’s perhaps no surprise that eight of the last nine winners have also won Major championships. The cream typically rises to the top at this 7,261-yard par-71 layout.

Scottie Scheffler, champion in each of the last two seasons, sat in sixth place when play was curtailed and the Pebble Beach title was handed to Wyndham Clark. He is the rightful favourite this week but he hasn’t won a full-field PGA Tour event since March.

The same accusation could be levelled at Justin Thomas, who is winless since lifting the 2022 US PGA Championship, but he’s prolific at his best and there has been a lot to like about his return to top form in recent months.

The 30-year-old always plays well at Scottsdale, where his elite iron-play is a significant asset, finishing third, third, 13th, eighth and fourth in his last five visits to Phoenix, and his form figures of 5-4-3-3-6 from his last five starts are just as impressive.

Qatar Masters winner prediction – Richard Mansell at 33/1

The Qatar Masters is back to a more familiar February slot at Doha GC, which has staged 23 of the 25 editions with the exception of 2020 and 2021.

An exposed layout, Doha suits the bigger hitters when the wind stays mild and that appears to be the case this week, although those with links experience will also expect to be in the hunt.

Richard Mansell finished ninth in Ras Al Khaimah a fortnight ago, his third consecutive top-25 finish, and he could be fresher than most in this field having made the decision to sidestep last week’s Bahrain Championship.

Mansell missed the cut on Doha debut last season but he followed a first-round 75 with a second-round 69 so there is the potential for significant improvement.
