The opening weekend of the Premier League season has been and gone and there were plenty of talking points to take from the ten fixtures.

Liverpool dropped points, both North London clubs got off to a winning start and Erling Haaland announced his arrival in the self-proclaimed best league in the world, while little seems to have changed in the red half of Manchester.

There is certainly plenty to take away from the weekend, and I’ve rounded up some of the best betting options in Betfair’s excellent Player Specials section, combining my favourite picks into one giant accumulator!

Cristian Romero to score 1+ Premier League goals

Tottenham played like a well-oiled machine at times in their 4-1 opener against Southampton and Antonio Conte’s defenders played a key role.

Two defenders – Eric Dier and Ryan Sessegnon – got on the scoresheet with right wing-back Emerson logged an assist.

Cristian Romero may not have found the net but he did register two shots and he has scored at least one league goal in each of his last four seasons, with his last failure to find the net coming in 2017/18 as he played just three times for Belgrano.

Scott McTominay to receive a red card

Manchester United’s performance as a whole on Sunday was dreadful but one man that drew particular criticism was Scott McTominay.

The 25-year-old was ineffective both with and without the ball and perhaps the most telling display of his incompetence was when he picked the ball up close to the edge of Brighton’s 18-yard box before inexplicably cutting inside, taking a heavy touch and then going over the top of the ball to crunch into Moises Caicedo’s ankle.

It was a challenge that he deserved to see red for and, while he may have escaped with a booking, if he continues to play like that it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him sent off at some point this season.

Dejan Kulusevski to score 10+ Premier League goals

Dejan Kulusevski hit the ground running at Tottenham after his January transfer from Juventus, scoring five and assisting eight more in just 14 Premier League starts.

It’s safe to say he’s started the new campaign well, too.

In a bid to secure a starting berth ahead of new signing Richarlison, the Sweden international scored one and assisted another in Spurs’ 4-1 win over Southampton, taking his tally to six goals and nine assists in 19 appearances.

At 22 years of age Kulusevski is only going to get better and he could enjoy a breakthrough year in 2022/23.

Aleksandar Mitrovic to score a Premier League hat-trick

Aleksandar Mitrovic announced his latest arrival in the Premier League in emphatic style on Saturday as he scored a brace against one of the best defences in the league – Liverpool.

He outmuscled and outjumped Trent Alexander-Arnold to head in the opener before both winning and converting a penalty that gave Fulham the lead again.

The Serbian looks to have improved massively since his last top-flight stint and comes into the league fresh from a record-breaking 43-goal season in the Championship.

He scored a hat-trick of hat-tricks in that campaign and netted two or more in 12 of his 44 appearances. I’m tipping him to get at least one this season.

Son Heung-min to have 50+ shots on target

Harry Kane was the only player to test the keeper more than 50 times last season but Tottenham teammate Son Heung-min certainly wasn’t far behind. The South Korean hit the target 47 times in his 35 appearances and averaged 1.41 shots on target per 90 minutes.

He may not have scored against Southampton on Saturday but he was a threat throughout, taking four shots and hitting the target with two of those to give himself a head-start in the shots on target race, with Harry Kane only managing two shots and one on target.
