Tip Reasoning

  • Napoli have won one of their last six Serie A games.
  • AC Milan have steadied the ship after consecutive league defeats, going unbeaten in three.
  • Milan have won six of eight home league games, and earned results against six of the top nine in Serie A.
  • Napoli remain decimated by injuries to key players.

Early pacesetters beginning to slip away?

The headline fixture of 2021’s penultimate Serie A matchday sees AC Milan and Napoli, whose title challenges have both stuttered in the face of injury crises, face off in a mouthwatering clash at San Siro.

Milan were indebted to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s brilliance last weekend, when his overhead kick rescued a point at Udinese. After suffering back-to-back defeats in November, the Rossoneri have taken advantage of a kind fixture list to steady the ship, earning seven points in three games. Their home record is amongst the best in the division, with Stefano Pioli’s team registering six wins in eight on their own turf, and conceding just seven goals.

Napoli’s blip, meanwhile, is threatening to become more serious; decimated by injuries, Luciano Spalletti’s charges have won just once in six Serie A outings, conceding almost twice as many goals in that run (eight) as they did in their first 11 games of the season (five). Napoli’s last away win in Serie A came at rock-bottom Salernitana on Halloween, and they’ve now won just one of their last four on the road.

Rossoneri to claim a huge win?

Although Napoli should be able to welcome Lorenzo Insigne and Andre-Frank Anguissa back from injury layoffs, the spine of their team remains decimated, with Kalidou Koulibaly, Fabian Ruiz, Piotr Zielinski, Eljif Elmas and Victor Osimhen either ruled out or highly doubtful for Sunday’s huge match.

AC Milan still have problems of their own, with Rafeal Leao, Ante Rebic and Simon Kjaer all out, although Olivier Giroud should be fit. The Rossoneri, however, have good depth within their ranks, and are worth backing, having already earned results against Atalanta, Roma, Lazio, Juventus and Inter this term.

Napoli’s injuries are not only more numerous than those affecting their hosts, but have wiped out the spine of their team. Spalletti’s team have lost to two of the three teams above them recently, and Milan could complete the hattrick here, with a 2-1 home win looking a solid correct score play.
