Tip Reasoning

Argentina remain hot favourites to be crowned Copa America champions this year after a long and arduous wait, and if anything their opening game result increases their chances.

They beat Chile 2-1 thanks to goals from Angel Di Maria, who had lost his grandmother just hours before, and Ever Banega in ten second half minutes. Chile replied in the 93rd minute with a consolation goal, but they never looked like they were going to get a result against a Argentina side who were without Lionel Messi. This can be classed as payback for last year’s Copa America final defeat in Chile.

This has done a lot for their chances in the competition. They now have seemingly easy matches against Panama and Bolivia, both of which should be very winnable and would see them top their group. This means that they can give Messi, Ezequiel Lavezzi, and Javier Pastore time to fully recover from their injuries in time for the knockout stages, where they will be well rested and fully fit. Unfortunately for the neutrals this does mean we are unlikely to see the Argentina captain against Panama.

However, Argentina looked more than capable without him as they won their 5th consecutive match and extended their unbeaten streak to seven matches. They have only lost one of their last 19 matches in normal time as well, a 2-0 defeat to Ecuador a few months after they lost on penalties to Chile.

Panama kicked off their debut Copa America campaign with a fantastic result as they beat Bolivia 2-1 to massively boost their chances of not finishing bottom of their group. They currently sit level on points with Argentina and level on goal difference as well.

This result was thanks to Blas Perez, who netted in the 11th and the 87th minutes of the game either side of Juan Arce scoring an equaliser. This result was their 2nd win in their last six matches, with two draws and two defeats making up the rest of the results.

The last and only match between these teams ended 3-1 to Argentina, and they have scored 24 goals in their last 12 matches as well. They definitely have the potential to demolish Panama, and the motivation will come from Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain competing for the main strikers role. I think this could mean a high scoring game, and Panama have the potential to get on the scoresheet as well so odds of 7/10 for Argentina to Win and Over 2.5 Goals look good. I’m going for a 3-1 correct score prediction again at 12/1.
