Reason For Chelsea vs Liverpool Predictions

  • Over 2.5 goals were scored in three of the last four meetings between Chelsea and Liverpool.
  • Both teams scored in three of the last four encounters between the clubs.
  • Liverpool won just 50% of their last 16 competitive matches.
  • Chelsea won each of their last seven domestic home games.

New look Chelsea’s big test

Following a massive summer outlay that saw the Blues snare Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech among others, big things are expected of Chelsea this season, and on Sunday, Frank Lampard’s new-look team face a stern test of their credentials against reigning Premier League champions Liverpool.

Despite their eventual 3-1 win, Chelsea’s display in their opening game of the new campaign at Brighton last week was unconvincing, though teething problems were always likely with so many new faces on board.

Lampard will know however, that his expensively assembled outfit will need to drag their performance up several levels if they are to go toe-to-toe with the division’s strongest team.

Defensive problems linger for Liverpool

Liverpool started their Premier League title defence with a thrilling 4-3 triumph over newly promoted Leeds at Anfield, and while the Reds’ sparkling attacking football made for an exhilarating watch, their performance at the other end was a worry.

With the usually dependable Virgil van Dijk uncharacteristically off his stride, Liverpool were opened up all too often by Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds, and with last season’s climax included, the Reds’ defensive record now shows just two clean sheets in 16 competitive fixtures.

Some of those defensive lapses saw Jurgen Klopp’s side beaten on their last trip to Stamford Bridge in an FA Cup tie in March, but having watched his team blitz Chelsea at Anfield in a white-knuckle league encounter in July, the German coach will hope his world class forwards mask his team’s lingering problems at the back again.

Goals and excitement on the cards at Stamford Bridge

That Premier League tussle at Anfield in July finished 5-3 to Liverpool in what proved one of the most exciting fixtures of the entire campaign, and the evidence suggests we are in for another cracker when the teams renew their rivalry on Sunday.

Over 2.5 goals rattled the net and both teams scored in three of the last four meetings between Chelsea and Liverpool, with an average of 4.25 goals plundered per 90 minutes across the same quartet of gripping head-to-heads – and we expect this fixture’s healthy final third figures to be maintained this weekend.

With German international Timo Werner keen to show his former suitors what they are missing and his compatriot Kai Havertz eager to shine, Chelsea have the attacking tools to make life uncomfortable for Liverpool’s less than rock solid centre this weekend.

However, with last week’s hattrick hero Mohamed Salah, the quicksilver Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino – who scored home and away against the Blues last term – in tow, Liverpool have sufficient firepower to strike back.

With so much attacking quality on show, and two defences that regularly give up chances, the over 2.5 goals and both teams to score combination is favoured for Sunday’s showpiece fixture, while our correct score prediction tips Chelsea and Liverpool to share the spoils in a 2-2 draw.

The Reds won just 50% of their last 16 competitive fixtures and just two of their last eight tests on the road, and Chelsea, who won each of their last seven domestic fixtures at Stamford Bridge will feel there is a point on offer this weekend.

The Blues scored exactly two goals in four of those seven victories, including the brace they hit in their FA Cup win over Liverpool in March, while a top-heavy Merseysiders notched exactly two goals in three of their last five clashes with Chelsea since April 2019.

Aligning those stats with the factors discussed above makes a 2-2 final score a likely outcome at Stamford Bridge.

Werner to make his mark?

Football’s habit of delivering fitting climaxes to intriguing sub-plots makes Timo Werner a decent shout to score anytime on Sunday. The German marksman had looked odds on to sign for Liverpool in the summer after a lengthy period of wooing by countryman and Reds manager Jurgen Klopp.

However, with financial complications restricting Liverpool in the market, Chelsea swooped in to sign the 24-year-old, and Werner, who bagged 34 goals in 45 games for RB Leipzig last season, will be determined to show the Merseysiders what he can do.
