Tip Reasoning

  • Aston Villa have scored in all nine of their home games in the Premier League.
  • Manchester United have scored in all 12 of their away games in all competitions.
  • Both teams to score has landed in five of Villa’s last eight games and they have just one clean sheet during that run.
  • United beat Villa 1-0 in the FA Cup on Monday and the hosts have five defeats in their last seven.

Second meeting in a week for Villa and United

Aston Villa were dumped out of the FA Cup by Manchester United on Monday and have a chance to try and take their revenge when the pair meet in the Premier League at Villa Park in the late kick off on Saturday.

Villa were arguably unlucky not to at least take the tie into extra time at Old Trafford earlier this week as they were twice denied an equaliser due to offside calls early in the second half.

Villa have a few major injury and suspension concerns but they could hand debuts to new arrivals Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Digne, with Danny Ings like to make way for the former if the Brazilian is handed a start.

Villa will be without Leon Bailey, Marvelous Nakamba (both injured) and the suspended John McGinn. Former United defender Ashley Young is a doubt and Bertrand Traore and Trezeguet are on AFCON duty.

The visitors are without suspended duo Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay, while Eric Bailly is with the Ivory Coast squad in Cameroon and Paul Pogba is missing through injury. However, Cristiano Ronaldo should be involved after missing the FA Cup meeting with a hip complaint.

Goals at both ends a strong option

Villa may have failed to score at Old Trafford on Monday, but they came agonisingly close and that was just the second time they have drawn a blank in their last nine games. The Villans have scored in all nine of their Premier League home fixtures this season and both teams have scored in six of those fixtures. United have scored in all 12 of their away fixtures and both teams to score has landed in eight of those fixtures, so backing both teams to score looks a good starting point for this fixture.

United the form team

The Red Devils may not be putting in particularly impressive displays of late, but they are picking up results and have six wins and just one defeat in their last 10 games across all competitions. Villa should be boosted by the arrivals of Coutinho and Digne, but whether or not they can make an instant impact remains to be seen.

Steven Gerrard’s men have four defeats in their last five games across all competitions, with one win coming at bottom club Norwich. Taking that into account I feel United could just edge this clash and a 2-1 win for the visitors has some appeal, as four of Villa’s last five defeats have been by one-goal margins and two of those were 2-1 losses.

Aston Villa predicted lineup: Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Mings, Targett, Ramsey, Luiz, Sanson, Buendia, Watkins, Coutinho
