Reason For Aston Villa vs Manchester United Predictions

  • Aston Villa have conceded three or more goals on nine occasions in the Premier League this season.
  • Manchester United have scored three or more in seven of their last 11 in all competitions, including each of their last three league matches.
  • Four of Man Utd’s last 11 matches have ended in 3-0 victories.
  • Mason Greenwood has scored five goals in his last six Premier League starts for Manchester United.

Relegation looms for dismal Villa

It was another poor day for Aston Villa on Sunday as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat at home to Premier League champions Liverpool, leaving Dean Smith’s side treading water in the relegation zone.

The Villains are 18th in the table, a point adrift of Watford above them but only ahead of 19th placed Bournemouth on goal difference. Not only that, but they still have to face both Manchester United and Everton and head into the final five games of the season in a dreadful run of form.

The hosts are currently winless in nine Premier League matches, losing seven of those and only managing draws against Sheffield United and Newcastle. Their defence – the worst in the top flight – has shipped 17 goals in this nine game period and they have responded with just five goals of their own. It’s looking very gloomy in that part of the Midlands right now.

Man Utd keep the pressure on the top four

Head a couple of hours up the M6, though, and you’ll find the red half of Manchester brimming with excitement. While poor defensively, Manchester United’s emphatic attacking force guided them to a 5-2 win over Bournemouth on Saturday and kept them right in the mix when it comes to the top four race.

That victory – their fourth in a row – put the pressure back on Chelsea and keeps them two points adrift of Frank Lampard’s Blues, while Wolves now find themselves three points behind Solskjaer’s men in 6th.

Manchester United are certainly the form team in the Premier League. They are unbeaten in 16 competitive games and have won 12 of those matches, netting 43 goals in the process. With games against Villa, Southampton, Crystal Palace, West Ham and Leicester still to come this season, there’s every chance they can keep the run going until the end of the month.

Red Devils’ goalscoring form set to continue

Generally speaking Manchester United have improved at the back in 2020, despite their performance against Bournemouth. Coming up against a Villa side that have failed to score in five of their last seven league matches means they should be pretty confident of their chances of keeping a clean sheet.

However, the main excitement lies in their attacking threat. They have scored at least three goals in each of their last three Premier League outings and in seven of their last 11 in all competitions. Villa, meanwhile, have conceded three or more on nine occasions in the top flight this term, so backing Manchester United over 2.5 team goals looks a very good value offering.

With four of the visitors’ last 11 competitive outings ending in 3-0 victories, and because of Aston Villa’s dreadful record going forward recently, a 3-0 correct score prediction is what we’re opting for as well.

Greenwood draws the plaudits

Praise has been heaped on Manchester United’s attacking trio of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood over the past few weeks, as well as midfield dynamo Bruno Fernandes.

While all are deserving of adulation, it’s Greenwood that is drawing the most plaudits. Ole Gunnar Solksjaer hailed him as one of the best finishers he’s ever seen after the victory over Bournemouth and, with three goals in his last two starts, it’s easy to see why.

The teenage attacker has amassed an impressive 16 goals this season despite being largely limited to substitute appearances, but his recent showings have cemented him a place in the starting lineup and we expect the goals to keep flowing freely.

So far, Greenwood has averaged a goal every 86 minutes this season and every 115 minutes in the Premier League. However, while he has made 41 appearances this season, it’s worth noting that 12 of his goals have come from the 19 starts he’s made across all competitions and he has scored five goals in his last six Premier League starts.

Greenwood’s potential is undeniable and the youngster is playing with sky-high confidence right now, so backing him to find the net on Thursday is an attractive option.

Aston Villa vs Manchester United team news

Aston Villa still can’t count on the availability of Tom Heaton, Wesley, Bjorn Engels and Matt Targett, while there are also slight concerns over the fitness of key pair Tyrone Mings and Jack Grealish.

Elsewhere, Pepe Reina is expected to hold on to the gloves, while the experienced Neil Taylor will fill in again at left-back for the aforementioned Targett.

Aston Villa predicted line-up: Reina – Konsa, Hause, Mings, Taylor – El Ghazi, McGinn, Luiz, Trezeguet, Grealish – Davis

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seems determined to keep a settled side, and with the noticeable drop in quality between his first choice and back-up players, it’s easy to see why.

Swedish centre-back Victor Lindelof is a doubt with a back injury however, though Eric Bailly is ready to step in to fill the void if he needs to.

Further up the pitch, Bruno Fernandes is expected to pair up with Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic again in midfield, while 18-year-old wonderkid Mason Greenwood looks certain to keep his spot after two spectacular goals against Bournemouth.

Manchester United predicted line-up: De Gea – Wan-Bissaka, Bailly, Maguire, Shaw – Matic, Pogba, Fernandes – Greenwood, Rashford, Martial
