Aston Villa’s fate was finally sealed on Saturday when Manchester United beat them 1-0 at Old Trafford, finally putting the Villa faithful out of their misery as safety became a mathematical impossibility.

This was their 9th defeat on the trot in the Premier League and their 5th straight defeat at Villa Park, so they didn’t put up much of a fight towards the end of their relegation battle. They have amassed a dismal 16 points so far this season, 13 fewer than their nearest rivals for the bottom spot Newcastle.

During this awful run of defeats Aston Villa have failed to score on six occasions and lost by more than a one goal margin five times, including 4-0 thrashings by Chelsea and Manchester City and a 6-0 hammering at home to Liverpool.

This is making for good reading for Southampton fans. Their club are pushing for a European qualification position after a hit and miss season, and a win on Saturday could send them above Liverpool and into 7th position. They are currently eight points adrift of a top five spot in the Premier League.

The Saints could only manage a draw at the out of form Everton last weekend though, taking their recent record to three wins, one draw, and one loss in their last five outings. They have managed to net nine goals during this period though, so they could be well on for bagging a few at Villa Park.

With Southampton in good form up front and Aston Villa all over the place in every aspect of their play it could be a cracking afternoon for the visiting Saints. I think they’ll bag a comfortable victory and boost their chances of qualifying for Europe, and odds of 29/20 for a Southampton -1 Handicap Win look good value to me. I’m going for a 3-0 correct score prediction at 10/1 as well.
