Atalanta looking to bounce back after drawing uncharacteristic blanks

Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta are looking to hit the goal trail once again, having been held to uncharacteristic 0-0 draws by Inter and Lazio, who admittedly rank as two of the league’s tougher opponents. The Bergamo club are now just a point clear of fifth-placed Juventus, and lost star wing-back Robin Gosens to Inter during the January transfer window.

However, Atalanta have seen an average of 3.3 goals per game scored in their 10 home league games this term, and 20 of their last 29 competitive games have contained over 2.5 goals. Gasperini’s men have an attacking record bettered only by Lazio and the two Milan clubs in Serie A, and won their last meeting with Cagliari, producing 20 shots on goal and having 62% possession in a 2-1 away victory.

Cagliari remain 18^th, following up promising back-to-back wins with a 1-0 loss to Roma and a respectable draw with Fiorentina. Walter Mazzarri’s men retain a dire travelling record, however, winning just once on the road and picking up fewer away points than any other Serie A club this campaign. Cagliari also have Serie A’s fourth-worst defensive record, conceding 44 goals this season.

Atalanta should win an entertaining affair

Atalanta’s consecutive stalemates came against strong opposition, and the Bergamo-based club do tend to entertain on home soil; prior to their draw with Inter, they’d seen a total of 31 goals scored across their last seven home games.

We expect Atalanta to make their superiority count, and as is usually the case, to entertain while doing so. A 3-1 home win could prove to be a decent correct score prediction.
