Tip Reasoning

  • Empoli have only won one of their last 20 Serie A games, a run which stretches back to December 2021.
  • Atalanta hammered Aurelio Andreazzoli’s men 4-1 in October’s return fixture.
  • The hosts need a result to have any chance of qualifying for Europe next season.
  • Over 3.5 goals have been scored in three of Atalanta’s last five games, and in four of Empoli’s last five.

Can Atalanta secure top-seven finish?

While Atalanta have endured a frustrating campaign, leaving boss Gian Piero Gasperini’s future in doubt after an incredible six-year tenure in Bergamo, during which he has led the club to unprecedented levels of success, they have a chance to end the season on a high by securing European qualification at home to Empoli.

Gasperini’s men will require a favour from either Juventus or Torino, who face Fiorentina and Roma, respectively, on Serie A’s final weekend, but will be confident of doing their own part when they host out-of-form opponents. Atalanta beat Empoli 4-1 in October’s return fixture, and although they have a poor home record (the seventh-worst in Serie A with 20 points from 18 games in Bergamo), will take heart from the fact Empoli last won on the road in December.

In fact, Empoli have only won one of their last 20 Serie A games, with only their fantastic start to the campaign serving to keep them up on their return to the top flight. Aurelio Andreazzoli’s men have conceded 70 goals in their 37 league games this term, more than all bar Salernitana, and have seen over 3.5 goals scored in four of their last five games, shipping 14 times during that run.

Hosts worth backing for high-scoring win

Despite Atalanta’s poor home form, the dreadful record of Empoli this calendar year, as well as both sides’ expansive styles of play, makes a high-scoring home win likely. 10 of Atalanta’s 16 league wins this season have contained a minimum of four goals, a figure we expect them to increase in their final outing of the campaign.

Meanwhile, Atalanta’s last clean sheet came in mid-March against Bologna, so a 3-1 home win could be a decent correct score prediction as the Bergamo outfit chase European qualification.
