Atletico Madrid vs Manchester City Predictions

  • Manchester City have won 10 of their last 12 away games, with two draws.
  • Atletico failed to register a single attempt on goal in the first leg in Manchester.
  • City have managed clean sheets in six of their last seven away from home.
  • Atletico have only conceded more than twice in three of their 43 games across all competitions.

City still have work to do

Manchester City head to Atletico Madrid on Wednesday for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie holding a slender 1-0 advantage.

City dominated the first meeting and Atleti were unable to even force a single attempt, but Pep Guardiola’s men failed to make the most of their chances and had to settle for just a 1-0 win.

Atleti should be better with home advantage in the return fixture, and City go into the game on the back of an energy-sapping 2-2 draw with Liverpool where they twice squandered a lead.

City look good value for victory

I am expecting a better showing from Los Colchoneros, but City were so dominant in that first leg it is hard to see anything other than an away win.

Atleti have hit a dip in form at the wrong time as they slipped to a 1-0 loss at Mallorca over the weekend and they have struggled at home in this competition all season. Diego Simeone’s side are yet to win in the Spanish capital in the Champions League this season as they picked up just one point at home in the group stages and were held to a 1-1 draw by Manchester United in the previous round.

City go into the game unbeaten in nine across all competitions (W6, D3) and they have actually been stronger on their travels, with 10 wins and two draws in their last 12 trips, so a win for the visitors looks a strong option for the main bet.

Goals could be in short supply

The Premier League leaders have managed a few big wins on the road this season but Atletico are a strong defensive unit and are unlikely to take too many risks in the early stages as long as the aggregate score remains 1-0 to the visitors.

A lack of an out-and-out striker/goalscorer is perhaps costing City, and with that in mind a 2-0 win for the visitors has a chance in the correct score market. If City do manage to score early on that could open the game up but it seems more likely that Atleti will be able to keep it tight until half-time, at least.

City have managed six clean sheets in their last seven trips so they may be able to win to nil at the Wanda Metropolitano, while Atleti have only conceded more than two goals in three games this season across all competitions.
